3 Injured When Truck Goes Over Interstate 70 Guardrail Near New Castle, Eastbound Lanes Reopen
NEW CASTLE, Colo. (CBS4) - Interstate 70 eastbound was closed late Friday morning after a cement truck went over the side of the road in Garfield County. The Colorado State Patrol said those lanes reopened just after 5 p.m. Friday.
It happened on I-70 near New Castle, west of Glenwood Springs. There were injuries related to the crash. The cement truck went over the guardrail next to the Colorado River and came to rest on a bank.
The cement truck driver, a 70-year-old man from Rifle was extricated and flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction with critical injuries. The driver of the passenger truck, a 31-year-old female, along with a passenger in the truck, were injured in the crash. That driver was flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction with critical injuries.
Just after 3 p.m. the Colorado State Patrol tweeted that a crane was trying to lift the truck off the river bank.
Traffic was detoured onto Highway 6 during the closure. Drivers taking the detour were asked not to slow down to look at the crash scene, as it was making a bad traffic situation even worse.
