Theft Suspect With Missing Shoe At Large After Crash
EDGEWATER, Colo. (CBS4) - A man with one shoe is on the run after stealing an SUV and a gun and smashing into a car at 20th Avenue and Fenton Street near Sloan's Lake.
The shoeless thief nearly got nabbed by the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the early Wednesday morning crash.
There were three people in the other car and they got out and tried to keep the suspect from getting away. Police also quickly arrived on the scene and briefly chased after him on foot but were unable to capture him.
Police say the man stole a black Ford Excursion and a gun from a location in Wheat Ridge and came to Edgewater. He allegedly fired shots nearby before running a stop sign and crashing into a red Saturn.
That Saturn was sent careening through a fence and into the side yard of a home, where it came to a stop. It also slightly scraped the home's exterior in the process.
Molly Fernow, who rents the home, told CBS4 she was asleep in the home at the time.
"At about 1:50 a.m. I heard a loud screech and a very loud bang and I knew right away ... it sound like it was right outside my window, which it was. And I jumped up and called 911," Fernow said.
The Saturn's occupants managed to get a sweatshirt off the suspect, and he also left a shoe there as he fled. Police also recovered a gun at the scene.
"I felt very lucky that it didn't go through the house. It was a big wake-up call but I felt very lucky and I was glad that the guys who were in it were fine and able to walk away," said Fernow.
Police say the suspect is a black man with a light colored shirt and red basketball shorts who was missing his white shoe when he left the scene.
