Target In Murder-For-Hire Plot Is Expected To Testify In Sentencing

DENVER (CBS4)- The target in a murder-for-hire plot is expected to testify next week when the man who wanted him killed, is sentenced on June 30.

Brooks Kellogg, 72, of Steamboat Springs, faces six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to hiring an undercover FBI agent to pull off a contract killing.

Newly filed court documents released in advance of Kellogg's sentencing paint two different pictures of a man with no prior criminal record, who seemed to live an exemplary life for more than seven decades, until now.

At the college where he graduated, Kellogg is known as a philanthropist who went on to teach high school and was involved in real estate.

A $2.6 million settlement over a Steamboat Springs development angered him and prosecutors claim Kellogg wanted Steven Bunyard killed. Bunyard was slated to receive the money in the settlement.

Bunyard will testify at Kellogg's sentencing.

Prosecutors write, "The fact that someone without a criminal past would be willing to hire someone to actually kill him over a business dispute and lawsuit was very real to the intended victim."

Kellogg's attorneys blame Barbara Blackmore, described as his mistress. They claim it was her idea to kill, not just harm, the intended victim.

It was Kellogg who flew to Denver International Airport and handed over $2,000 as partial payment to an FBI agent who posed as a hitman.

Despite the sordid details, Kellogg's wife of 45 years has stood by her man.
