Spina Bifida Walk-N-Roll Draws People From Inside, Outside Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - Hundreds of Coloradans as well as residents from neighboring states took part in this year's Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida in Washington Park on Sunday.

This was the 15th year of the event in Denver, which raises funds for the Spina Bifida Association of Colorado. Money raised goes to outreach programs and research into treatment and prevention.

"Spina bifida is a neural tube spinal defect," said board member Mark Deschamp. "It is actually the most common birth defect in the world."

Deshaw said the event is also about connecting communities and showing children with the defect -- many who are confined to wheelchairs -- that their futures are full of possibilities.

"So it's possible to live a full and happy life, and that's what I want to get across and show them," he told CBS4.

Megan, 9, and her family came to the walk from Nebrasksa. She's confined to a wheelchair and hasn't been on many long trips.

"That's the longest drive we've ever been on," she said.

Evan, 5, put on a Superman hat and T-shirt for the walk. He was moving around quickly on his wheelchair during the walk.

"For Evan it affects him pretty much from the waist down. He doesn't have any feeling from the knees down," his dad said.
