Shooting Victim Remembered For Joyful Moments
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Micayla Medek was remembered for her love of Barbie dolls as a kid, her tendency to carry a camera everywhere she went and her love of Country music.
The 23-year-old was remembered at her memorial service as much more than one of 12 victims killed in the Aurora theater shooting.
Micayla called herself a Subway sandwich artist on her Facebook page.
Medek lived in the northwest Denver suburb of Westminster. She attended Aurora Community College and worked at a Subway sandwich shop.
Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, Gov. John Hicknelooper, Aurora Fire Chief Mike Garcia, Aurora police officers and hundreds who knew Micayla and loved her filled the church on Thursday morning.
Micayla was remembered for bringing the joy she brought to everyone she met each day of her life.
Some of the officers who responded to the Aurora shooting attended the service. That prompted a round of applause from the pews.
But it was Micayla's friends who provided a glimpse into who she was, the amateur photographer, "She captured all the moments that made her life great and she has given us something we can always look back to."
The music played at the service was upbeat to represent a young woman who tried to find joyful moments in everyday life until the end.
"It's not just Colorado, it's the whole world that is grieving with us," said one of Micayla's friends.
Don't miss a special hour long report on CBS4 on Friday at 4 p.m. titled "Movie Theater Tragedy: Remember, Honor Support" which will look back at the week following the Aurora shootings.
