Massive Fire Destroys Buildings In Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A fire Monday evening on an Adams County ranch near Interstate 76 and Sable in Adams County destroyed several buildings.

At about 4:51 p.m. firefighters were called to a small barn fire, but strong wind kicked up the fire and other buildings became engulfed with flames.

"We had a pretty good arrival with two or three units. We had one structure going and by the time we were able to get some suppression on the fire it spread to three or four buildings," Deputy Fire Marshall Kevin Vincel with South Adams County Fire said. "The wind was coming out of the west and then shifted, headed south, and it just took off from there."

Some flames jumped to the other side of the interstate, which had to be shut down in both directions for hours. Sable also had to be closed.

Fatima Morales and her family were sent running from the fire.

"We were scared and we didn't know what was happening," Morales said. "The police were knocking on our door and telling us to get out."

Vincel said there were several explosions. At one point an object could be seen in video from Copter4 rocketing into the air from what looked like an explosion (watch the video below to see the explosion).

"There was a relatively large fuel tank and several propane tanks, so we did an evacuation and backed everybody out for safety precautions," Vincel said.

Vincel said the fire melted a power line that fell on a couple firemen, but nobody was injured.

Several horses, goats and dogs were all evacuated. No people or animals were injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
