Security Procedures At Jeffco Jail Change After Escape Attempt
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - The sheriff is changing security procedures at the Jefferson County Jail after an inmate was shot to death while trying to escape a medical clinic.
Jesus Aguilar, a man facing a long sentence, was shot to death as he was trying to flee. He may have told jail deputies he was injured simply as an excuse to make his break.
"It's an absolute possibility that his injuries were staged in an effort to get him out of the facility so that he had an opportunity to escape," Jacki Kelley with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said.
American Medical Imaging in Golden will no longer allow inmates to be brought there from jail because it's not a secure facility.
"We are implementing the flexi-cuffs, which are the plastic cuffs. We're going to increase the manpower associated with these transports if the metal restraints have to come off. And we're also looking at having more medical professionals come into our facility," Kelley said.
Chris Alm's son is an inmate currently at the jail who has been trying to get treatment on the outside for what might be a broken hand.
"I'm not sure, but it could be that they're just afraid to take anybody out of the facility because of what happened before," Alm said.
The sheriff's department says that is not true. They say if someone needs attention, they get it.
Inmates are taken out an average of two times a day for treatment. The secure facility at Denver Health Medical Center is now being used more often.
