Delivery Driver Acted Suspicious At Buckley Air Force Base
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Homes were evacuated and Buckley Air Force Base was put on alert after a security concern Tuesday morning.
The security concern occurred around the south gate to the base. Police evacuated homes and closed roads in an area of Tower Road and Mississippi Avenue, and as far north as Alameda Avenue and East Ohio Drive.
Aurora police posted that they were dealing with some sort of security threat on its Twitter page.
Officials at Buckley said the threat centered around and 18-wheeler making a delivery at approximately 9 a.m. While they investigated they set up a 2,000-foot perimeter. People who lived within that perimeter had to be evacuated from their homes.
"Buckley's highly trained security forces personnel, in cooperation with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Aurora Police Department expertly responded to the situation to ensure the safety and security of the installation and surrounding community," Buckley Air Force Base said in a statement.
"During a standard inspection, a 460th Security Force Squadron gate guard detected suspicious responses from the truck driver and inconsistencies between the shipment seals and the vehicle's manifest. The bill of lading stated the shipment contained inert munitions, which were consistent with a shipment expected by the Colorado Air National Guard 140th Wing.
"The gate guard notified base leadership who enacted safety precautions on base and contacted Aurora Police Department."
Officials determined there was no threat to the public and the scene was cleared by noon.
Everybody has been allowed back inside their homes and roads have been reopened.
