RTD Rail Project 'Connecting Aurora' Marks Progress

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - The Regional Transportation District is marking its progress on the Aurora Line/I-225 Rail project that will better connect the city.

To celebrate nearly 60% construction completion, RTD is hosting the "Connecting Aurora Through Rail -- Celebrating Progress" event on Thursday.

The 10.5 mile Aurora Line/I-225 Rail will expand light rail service from the Nine Mile Station near I-225 and Parker Road. It will travel through major areas of Aurora, including the Aurora City Center and Anschutz Medical Campus, Children's Hospital, and the new VA Hospital. The line ends at Peoria Station, where riders can catch the East Rail Line to DIA or Denver Union Station.

The celebrated progress includes laid track and ballast, design work that is 99% complete, seven light rail bridges complete or close to it, and overhead wire strung up to the Iliff Bridge.

Construction in the center of the city where the train will be street-running will soon require road closures.

The new line is set to open in 2016.
