Business Owner Killed In Golden Structure Collapse

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)- Firefighters in Golden and West Metro Fire rushed to a structure collapse inside a business at about 1:40 p.m. Friday. The owner of the business, Alpine Envelopes, was killed.

It happened inside Unit 1 in the retail complex at 16010 West 5th Avenue, located west of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

A mezzanine above an office that served as a false roof and also used to store materials, collapsed on the business owner, killing him. His daughter was bringing him lunch when she saw the collapsed structure and called for help.

Heavy rescue equipment was called to the scene. It took rescuers about 20 minutes to reach the 46-year-old man because he was buried under so much debris.

Investigators are trying to figure out why the structure collapsed, if it was a weight issue or a structural problem. A structural engineer arrived on scene just after 5 p.m. to evaluate the collapsed structure in the building to determine the process to safely repair the structure.

The identity of the businessman has not been released.
