Rockies Would Like Another Sweep Of The Yankees At Coors Field
DENVER (CBS4) - Six years ago the Colorado Rockies swept the New York Yankees in a three-game series at Coors Field. On Tuesday, for the first time since, the Yankees return to Colorado for another three-game set.
Believe it or not, many current Rockies players grew up rooting for the team in pinstripes.
"They were really good when I was young, so it's hard not to love them," relief pitcher Adam Ottavino said.
"I grew up loving them; my dad was a Yankee fan from way back when. I guess I was grandfathered into it," Michael Cuddyer said. "It was them and the Orioles. I know they are in the same division, but the Orioles were the closest team to me proximity-wise. I always liked the Yanks, Don Mattingly was my favorite player."
Even manager Walt Weiss grew up cheering for the team he will be trying to beat.
"I grew up just 30, 35 miles from Yankees Stadium," Weiss said. "My dad was a big Yankees fan, yeah, I was too."
The Yankees team that will be paying their visit this week isn't exactly at full strength. Superstars like Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are all out with injuries.
"There's no reason to be intimidated. I mean, they've got some good players, but they're not the team they were in spring training because they've got a lot of guys who are hurt," Jeff Francis said. "But they're still a team that can do some damage. We have to come out, we have to play well."
One thing the Rockies know is that there will be plenty of Yankees fans in the stands at Coors Field this week.
"I would expect that there will be a lot of Yankees fans here, but we have a lot of fans too, so we'll see," Ottavino said.
"We'll have a lot of purple pinstripes too," Weiss said.
