Robbery Suspect Shot & Killed During Hold Up

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Aurora are trying to piece together the events leading up to a deadly shooting at a cigarette shop Friday afternoon.

Two men tried to rob a cigarette shop in the 9400 block of E. Colfax Ave. at about 2 p.m. They kept a woman and her granddaughter, who were inside the store at the time, hostage at gunpoint.

According to the woman, the suspects shot at two clerks inside the store and that's when the clerks shot back. Everyone who fired a gun was also struck with return gunfire.

"Two guys walked in, one guy grabbed me and put a gun to my head and told me if I moved and didn't give him my money he was going to shoot my granddaughter. I handed him the money, like that, and then shots started firing and I grabbed my granddaughter and we ran out and got in my silver van," said hostage Jackie Goetz.

One of the robbery suspects ran out of the store, fell to the ground and died in the parking lot behind the store. The other robber was seen leaving the scene in a red pickup truck or SUV.

"The two store employees inside did suffer injuries. They were transported to a local hospital where they are being treated for those injuries," said Aurora Police Dept. spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson.

The two store clerks were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

A few minutes after the robbery police received a call that a red truck or SUV showed up at University Hospital in Aurora with a man who had a gunshot wound. That man was being treated and was being monitored by police Friday afternoon.

Neither of the hostages were hurt in the shooting.
