Rescuers Give Up Trying To Retrieve Hiker's Body

DENVER (AP) - Authorities have abandoned attempts to retrieve a body from the Lost Creek Wilderness Area, citing the danger to rescuers.

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said Tuesday an attempt to retrieve the body by horseback on Sunday resulted in an injury to one rescuer and to a horse. Wegener says the horse had to be put down.

The sheriff says the body is presumed to be 44-year-old Frank Stanley of Englewood, who set out to hike up 12,431-foot Bison Peak on July 25. He sent a text message after reaching the summit but did not return. His Jeep was found at the trailhead in the Pike National forest.

The body was discovered Saturday.

The peak is about 40 miles southwest of Denver.
