Red Cross Honors Colorado Heroes

DENVER (CBS4)- The American Red Cross honored Colorado heroes in downtown Denver.

Friday morning's "Breakfast of Champions" at the Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center, focused on the military, and also recognized other selfless, lifesaving acts.

The "Spirit of the Red Cross" award was presented to AirLife Denver nurse, Greg Hynes, who used up his vacation and volunteered to work in some of the most difficult conditions to ease the suffering of Haitians after last year's earthquake.

In November 2010, he returned to the Haiti for a second stint, giving selflessly of his time and talent to help establish programs to train Haitian nurses and emergency responders - therefore improving the impoverished country's capacity to respond to future disasters.

Not all the honorees were human, however. "Kooks," an 8-month old pug, was honored for waking his owners when their apartment caught fire so they could escape unharmed.

"We credit it all to the dog who actually saved our lives and probably some of the other tenants," said Kooks' owner Patrick Vigil.

Other honorees also saved lives or gave countless hours of their own time to help others.
