Police Search For Arsonist In Longmont

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - Alleyways in Longmont have turned into targets for an arsonist.

At least six fires, and possibly more, have been set in alleys since mid-June.

The arsonist is apparently using furniture and debris dumped in the alleys.

In some cases, the fires have spread to property. So far, no one has been hurt.

Connie Lynch, a young mother living near one the fire sites, told CBS4 she has a plea for the arsonist.

"Please stop. Please don't endanger my family, endanger my house," Lynch said. "This is the only place I have to live. I have nowhere to go and if my house would've caught on fire, I have nothing."

A possible suspect was caught on a surveillance camera just before a mattress burned recently.

Last Sunday, Zac Stamey saw someone lighting a couch on fire from his bedroom window.

"Possibly a lighter, holding it to the couch," Stamey said.

One week earlier, another arson fire was started in the same alley. That one burned the barn behind the home Andrew Albright rents.

"I was really just shocked how big the flames were and we didn't even know it was burning, the neighbor came and banged on the door," Albright said.

Police are stepping up patrols in the alleys.

Police described the suspect as being a dark haired, white male in his 20s, about 180 pounds and 5-foot-8.

The man may have a ponytail and he appeared to be wearing a camouflage style T-shirt.
