Police Arrest Trucker After Alleged Crime Spree
GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - A truck driver from Phoenix was arrested Tuesday in northern Colorado after what authorities say was a crime spree, starting with a vehicle stolen in Greeley.
Scott Walker, 47, was arrested after surrendering to police at a home west of the city, police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said.
Walker is facing at least 11 felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, armed robbery and felony menacing. He was being held without bond.
Walker was taken to the hospital after wrecking a cable TV truck that he tried to ram through a fence, Tymkowych said.
Tymkowych didn't know which company Walker was driving for.
Police got a call Tuesday morning about a semitrailer parked in the middle of a Greeley street, blocking traffic. It was unclear if the truck stalled or if the driver parked it.
Police later received reports of a man walking down the sidewalk, waving a gun and yelling, Tymkowych said. Police said they later determined the man was Walker and the abandoned truck was his.
Tymkowych said Walker went to an apartment complex, looking for a vehicle. He carjacked a Comcast TV truck, police said.
Walker went to a home west of Greeley and drove the truck through a closed gate, got out of the truck and went inside, where he confronted a father and son, Tymkowych said.
Homeowner Michael Morgan told KMGH-TV that Walker said he was running from police. Morgan's son, Max, a freshman linebacker for the Colorado State University football team, was also home.
"(Walker) told me his life was in ruins and a mess," Morgan told the Greeley Tribune. Morgan, a Mormon bishop, said he offered to help him.
Walker then went outside and fired a shot at a sheriff's deputy who was walking toward him, Tymkowych said. The deputy's car was hit.
The suspect then ran through the house, got in the Comcast truck and tried to ram through the fence, he said.
"But the fence won," Tymkowych said. "It demolished the truck."
Walker got out of the truck and surrendered to officers who had surrounded the home, Tymkowych said.
