Playground Crash Victim: 'I Thought My Best Friend Was Dying'
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Matt McCord was sitting with his longtime friend, Robert Husak, on a bench near a playground on Friday afternoon when a pickup truck crashed into them.
"At that time, I thought my best friend was dying in front of me," said McCord.
Husak, 19, of Morrison, is in critical condition after he was pinned under the truck. The crash happened Friday afternoon at the Whisper Creek Apartments at 3505 S. Nelson Circle, off Kipling and Hampden near Lakewood.
Husak suffered a brain injury and skull fractures, according to his mother. McCord was also injured in the crash.
"I saw my friend pinned up, the truck tire on top of him against the bench. I yelled at Robert, teling him that he can't die," said McCord.
State Patrol is investigating the crash. Troopers said Sebastian Kowzan of Arvada was driving a landscaping company truck when the crash happened.
"The guy who was driving the truck looked under the truck and said, 'Oh, my God.'"
Troopers said Kowzan was trying to make a left turn into the apartment parking lot, but instead, lost control and drove into the playground. McCord said Kowzan revved his engine before hitting the pair.
"Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know, but I don't believe for a second he lost control of it. I believe he's lying," said McCord.
Kowzan talked to CBS4 on the phone. He denied acting recklessly but would not offer any other comment about the crash.
"That one moment, I didn't do anything. I didn't pull him out of the way and he's now in the hospital, in bed, not even talking. He's on a respirator and I could have just pulled him out of the way and I didn't," said McCord.
State Patrol continues to investigate the accident. The driver of the truck could face charges.
