O'Reilly & Avs Appear Over, Report Says He Wanted To Be Captain

DENVER (CBS4) - It appears Ryan O'Reilly may have played his last game for the Colorado Avalanche.

Published reports in the U.S. and Canada claim the Avs are trying to work out a trade with an Eastern Conference team.

O'Reilly is holding out for a deal that would pay him about $5 million a year. The Avs are holding firm at a 2-year deal worth $7 million. That's the same contract they gave Matt Duchene.

They've also offered O'Reilly a 5-year deal worth $17 million.

O'Reilly was terrific last year with 18 goals and 37 assists. But the Avs don't want to pay him more than they think he's worth and now it looks like he may soon be playing elsewhere.

The Denver Post also reported that people who know O'Reilly think he was upset when the Avs didn't make him captain last summer, opting to giving the captaincy to Gabriel Landeskog. The report says that could be the reason O'Reilly played hardball in negotiations.
