6 Police Shoot, Kill Armed Carjacking Suspect During Capture Attempt In Aurora
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police from Aurora and Denver were trying to capture a carjacking suspect with a weapon when officers fired, killing the suspect. The shooting happened at the intersection of Sable Boulevard and East 35th Place, just south of Interstate 70.
Copter4 flew over the scene which showed a large police presence in the area. Police say it started about 11 a.m. when the owner of a Mercedes was carjacked and kidnapped at 48th and Chambers. Officers with Denver police followed at a safe distance to 35th and Abilene when a man wearing a full face mask got out of the car with a gun aimed at officers.
Denver police called Aurora police for help. The suspect ignored multiple commands from police to drop the weapon and that's when six officers, five from Denver and one from Aurora, fired shots.
"Officers engaged him, gave him several verbal demands to drop the weapon in his hand. At some point he threatened the officers with the weapon and that's when the officers discharged their weapons," said a Denver Police spokesperson.
The suspect, who has not been identified, died. All officers involved were wearing body cameras.
The kidnapping victim was not hurt.
