Search Is On For Suspects After Officer Shot In Cherry Hills Village Home

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A search is ongoing for at least four suspects after a Cherry Hills Village police officer got shot and injured while responding to a home invasion and robbery.

The shooting happened late Monday night near the intersection of East Hampden Avenue and Sedgwick Drive. That's in the Devonshire Heights neighborhood.

The male officer is a 7-year veteran of the police force. His name is Cory Sack, and is recovering at the hospital. He went into surgery early Tuesday morning and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers responded to a 911 hang-up call at the home at 11 p.m. Sack responded and when he entered the home, he came across two intruders. Gunfire was exchanged but Sack was able to get out. He was shot twice, in the leg and ankle. No residents of the home were hurt, although they were in the home at the time.

"All the residents of the house are now safe," said Cherry Hills Village Police Chief Michelle Tovrea on Tuesday morning.

Tovrea said that neighbors no longer have to "shelter in place" in the neighborhood where majority of the search for the suspects took place overnight.

She said two of the suspects were inside the home when the shooting happened. They were described as black males wearing dark clothing. Tovrea said it appears no other houses in the neighborhood were targeted.

Neighbors who took the family in after the incident say they have surveillance inside and out of their home. In the video, they say the suspects were visible, but heavily clothed and wearing masks. They also said the husband was held at gunpoint. His wife told them she was the one who dialed 911 and threw her phone before the suspects noticed.

The neighbors say the suspects came with backpacks and demanded cash, jewelry and other valuables.

A stolen vehicle was recovered near the shooting scene.

Tovrea said she doesn't recall there ever being an officer-involved shooting in Cherry Hills Village.
