Neighbor Has Kind Words For Woman Who Jumped To Her Death

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Aurora firefighters continue their investigation into what caused an apartment fire that killed one resident and injured a dozen others.

The fire happened early Saturday morning in the Aspenwood Apartments near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Potomac. The death and the injuries happened after some people living in the building that caught fire jumped from second and third story windows.

Karen Dias, 66, died after falling from her balcony. Her son survived. Dias' neighbor said the community is now missing a caring soul and kind heart.

"She was a very nice lady, very spry and very energetic; always had something nice to say," the neighbor said. "They said an elderly lady had jumped. I knew it was her because she's the only one up there."

The building sat empty on Sunday. Smoke stains, charred balconies and boarded up windows told the story of the fire. The displaced people are either living with relatives or staying in hotels with the help of the Red Cross.

Residents may be allowed back in soon to gather some belongings, but it could be a month or so before the most heavily damaged apartments are habitable again.
