GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) -- Eastbound lanes of I-70 have reopened after a mudslide forced the highway to close west of Glenwood Springs -- during the heavily traveled Friday afternoon. Westbound lanes were still closed as of 11 p.m. Friday. Video shows cars and trucks stuck in the mud on the interstate.
Colorado's Department of Transportation reopened the eastbound lanes at New Castle around 10:30 p.m. Friday. The Colorado State Patrol in Eagle said the mud on the westbound lanes was over half-way up the concrete center barriers in places.
One man was spotted sitting on top of his SUV.
"Luckily all vehicles that were stuck have been recovered. Crews are working with loaders to clear the roadway however this is an extended scene," the CSP tweeted.
Maintenance crews and other emergency response agencies are on scene.
"People are warned against trying to go up the Four Mile Road and using Forest Service Road 800 past Sunlight to get around the slide area. This is not a viable alternative route, especially when the road is wet," the Garfield County Sheriff's Office stated.
