Moffat Schools Say Breast Cancer Bracelets OK
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- The Moffat County School District says it has not banned students from wearing "I Heart Boobies! Keep a Breast Alive!" bracelets, intended to promote awareness of breast cancer.
The Denver Post reports the school district sent a statement to faculty and parents on Monday after allegations that it was restricting students' freedom of expression.
Superintendent Joe Petrone said that individual students were asked to find an alternative to wearing the bracelets, such as wearing the bracelets inside out.
The Keep A Breast Foundation says the bracelets are part of a campaign to educate young people about cancer support and early detection.
Schools in other states have banned the bracelets because they say the language is inappropriate. The American Civil Liberties Union has challenged the bans in court.
