Man Accused Of Breaking Into Home, Sexually Assaulting Woman
DENVER (CBS4) - A man accused of breaking into a home and sexually assaulting a 36-year-old woman has been formally charged.
Lynn Kimbrough with the Denver District Attorney's Office said Juan Solis, 51, was charged with first-degree burglary, robbery, assault in the second-degree and two counts of sexual assault.
Detectives said they were led to Solis when he allegedly left fingerprints at the scene.
"The charges allege that on July 25 Solis broke into the home of a woman in the 700 block of West 5th Avenue by removing an air conditioning unit from a window then physically and sexually assaulted her," Kimbrough said in a statement.
The arrest warrant shows the woman was assaulted after she was strangled and punched in the face.
The woman screamed and fought back against her attacker. Police said Solis allegedly grabbed a bag of her laundry and ran away.
"She fought him off. She was so beat up from it she had to go to the hospital. It was a fight for her life," said the victim's neighbor Mary Ann Hogan.
Authorities are concerned over the brazen nature of the crime.
"I think what is disturbing about the allegations in this case is she's home sleeping. She's secure in her home, the doors are locked, the windows are locked and yet this is someone who is able to break in by taking out the air conditioning unit," said Kimbrough.
Solis' bond is set at $60,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
