Leprino Foods' Greeley Cheese Plant To Open Nov. 1
GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Leprino Foods Co.'s new mozzarella cheese factory will open Nov. 1 in Greeley, leaving Weld County officials trying to find ways to boost milk production to supply the factory.
The $200 million plant is expected to process 7 million pounds of milk each day, more than double the amount of milk produced by the county's 50,000 dairy cows.
The Denver Post reports that Weld County officials are considering changing ordinances to allow farmers to have up to 10 animals per acre, up from the current four per acre.
Leprino supplies cheese to Domino's, Pizza Hut and Papa John's, as well as hundreds of other companies that sell mozzarella at retail or use it in food products. The new plant is expected to employ up to 500 people.
