Key Taken During Puffer Theft Likely Used To Enter House, Homeowners Subdue 1 Suspect

By Kelly Werthmann

DENVER (CBS4) – One man is in custody and another on the run after entering a Denver home Tuesday morning using a key stolen from a puffer SUV.

Denver police said a black Yukon was stolen last Friday when it was left running outside a house on the 2700 block of South Depew Street. Then, just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, two men used a key likely from the stolen vehicle to enter the home.

According to police, one suspect went into the house and was tackled and held by the homeowners until officers arrived. The other suspect was outside and fled.

"Upon arrival, officers heard screaming coming from inside the residence. Officers entered the home and observed the homeowners to restrain (the suspect)," the probable cause of arrest statement said.

Police arrested William J. Anaya, 30, who has a lengthy criminal history, including several arrests for vehicle theft. Officers found a set of brass knuckles in Anaya's pocket, according to the police statement.

Nobody was hurt during the incident, police told CBS4. Police are calling it an attempted burglary and not a home invasion.

As of Tuesday afternoon police did not have a description of the second suspect at large or any other details about the Yukon that has yet to be recovered.
