One lane going west was reopened at around 9 p.m.
The slide happened early in the morning.
The slide happened along an elevated part of the highway where the westbound lanes are stacked on top of the eastbound lanes.
The slide happened in an area where there was no fencing.
"All you can do is be grateful that nobody was injured, no cars were caught in it," said Tracy Trulove. "We have a natural beauty in Glenwood Canyon but we also have a natural hazard that comes with it."
The Colorado Department of Transportation says they expect to haul out 25-30 dump truck loads of rock.
Three of the rocks are the size of a suburban according to CDOT.
Travelers trying to use detours to get around the closure -- using Highways 131, 40 and 13 -- will be delayed by as much as four hours. Drivers are urged to avoid Cottonwood Pass.
Earlier, the Colorado State Patrol tweeted out about the full closure of I-70.
