Eastbound Interstate 70 Reopens As Conditions Improve In Eastern Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - The Colorado Department of Transportation has reopened Interstate 70 through Colorado's Eastern Plains as well as all of Interstate 76. I-70 was shut down in both directions just east of the Denver metro area all the way to Burlington early Tuesday morning as the major Colorado snowstorm was in full effect. Westbound lanes reopened at 2 p.m. followed by the eastbound lanes around 5:30 p.m.

A Blizzard Warning was in effect on the Eastern Plains in the morning. Travel conditions are very difficult and anyone driving in the area is asked to take it very slow and carefully. Better yet, try driving on Wednesday instead.

"Travelers should NOT proceed without adequate snow tires and should be prepared for icy roads, heavy snow, limited visibility changing conditions and road closures," officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation wrote in an alert on cotrip.org.

Interstate 76 was closed most of the day from Lochbuie to Sterling, making travel to and from Nebraska generally impossible. But improving conditions led officials to reopen the interstate in the late afternoon.
