Horse-Drawn Sleigh Delivers Diners To High Country

Tucked away in Colorado's high country, just beyond the glitz and glitter of Aspen, you'll find a ghost town in Castle Creek Valley. Above that ghost town sits a real destination restaurant.

In the winter, diners have two choices to get to the Pine Creek Cookhouse Restaurant -- ski or horse-drawn sleigh. The Cookhouse is 13 miles out of Aspen, and diners all agree, it's worth the extra effort it takes to get there.

"It's certainly very fine dining that we consider 'mountain gourmet.' At 10,000 feet in elevation, everything boils slow, and the flames are slow," said executive chef Rob McClanahan.

His menu specializes in wild game and fresh seafood, what he calls "alpine cuisine."

"It takes in northern Spain, northern France, the Alps, Nepal and northern China," he said.

The diners have nothing but rave reviews for the food, the atmosphere and the travel arrangements.

"The food was fantastic," a diner said. "It's a very excellent experience. All of it. You have to save room for dessert."
