Homeowners Feel Betrayed After Open Space Put Up For Sale

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Homeowners in a Jefferson County neighborhood said they feel betrayed by Foothills Parks and Recreation District after the office put open space near them up for sale.

The 18 acres sit at Ward Road and South Simms. Homeowners claim 12 years ago they were promised the property would never be sold.

Foothills Parks and Rec said selling the land to a developer could raise $4.5 million for the district.

"We don't really think of these as open spaces. They're basically vacant parcels that are not being used for any active or passive recreational opportunities," said Foothills Park and Recreation District spokesman Ron Hopp.

"Elk, deer, we've got eagles. We've even seen bear back here," said resident Don Sanchez.

People who live near the open space said Foothills Parks and Rec should rearrange its budget and leave the land alone. Foothills said several developers have expressed interest in the area.
