Highway 93 Renamed To Honor Fallen Jefferson County Deputy
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - A Colorado highway now bears the name of a Jefferson County deputy killed on patrol last year.
Sgt. David Baldwin died in January 2014 while on motorcycle patrol on Highway 93. A wrong-way driver hit him head-on.
The eight-mile stretch of Highway 93 starting in Golden now holds the name "Sgt. David M. Baldwin Memorial Highway."
A special dedication ceremony took place Monday morning at North Table Mountain Park where people who knew Baldwin talked about his sense of community, dedication to family and law enforcement.
Baldwin's wife Crystal thanked all those who have shown love and support to her family since his death. She also talked about what she says is one of the hardest parts of grieving and how the new sign now helps.
"When you lose someone that you love one of your greatest fears is that they will be forgotten. You know that they will always live on in your heart but you worry that other people will forget them," she said. "These signs being erected here today help in bringing us just a little bit more peace and know that Dave will never be forgotten because they will be here long after we're gone, long after we stop speaking his name. So thank you for doing this."
His wife also mentioned that Badlwin always wanted to make a difference. She says with the sign reminding drivers to be safe he's still making that difference even after his death.
