3-Year-Old Boy Spends Christmas In Hospital After Crash

DENVER (CBS4) - A 3-year-old boy is spending Christmas in the hospital after he and his mother were rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver.

Jordan Ocana and his mother April Armijo were exiting 6th Avenue at Sheridan on Friday when their car was struck.

Ocana broke his jaw in three places.

"I kept trying to wake him up because I was so worried about him," Armijo said. "And I kept trying to get him to open his eyes but he wouldn't open his eyes. He was just bleeding from the mouth."

Surgeons wired Ocana's jaw shut, and it will stay that way for at least another month.

On Monday when a CBS4 crew was visiting Ocana in the hospital it was the first time since the crash that he had gotten up out of his hospital bed, and it was also the first time that he had smiled.

"As long as he's getting better that's all that matters," Armijo said.

Armijo's car was totaled and a bunch of Christmas presents they had in the trunk were destroyed.

Police say the driver has been charged with drunk driving, vehicular assault and child abuse.
