Heavy Fuels Feed Arkansas Fire Burning In Park County
PARK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- When firefighting resources are already stretched thin in Colorado, there's another wildfire burning in the southwestern part of the state.
The Arkansas Fire is burning on the South Park Ranger District in Park County two miles west of Lake George and one mile south of Highway 24.
The fire has burned about 30 acres and is burning in heavy fuels such as Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer. The fire was 40 percent contained by 10 p.m. Thursday.
Nine engines, one water tender, three firefighting hand crews, two helicopters, 10 smokejumpers are fighting the fire along with numerous overhead support.
Lightning is said to be the cause of the Arkansas Fire. It was zero percent contained as of Thursday evening.
Winds have been fairly calm, helping fire crews get a better handle on the blaze.
The sheriff's office has issued a voluntary evacuation for a one mile radius around the fire. There are eight structures threatened within one mile of the fire.
There were 99 reverse 911 calls made and of those 99 calls, 61 were delivered to either a person or some sort of messaging device.
