Full Closure Of I-25 At Santa Fe Continues Overnight Through The Weekend

(Note: Watch the video report for more detailed and animated maps of the detours)

DENVER (CBS4) - A major road project is moving forward. The Colorado Department of Transportation will close all lanes of Interstate 25 between Santa Fe Drive and 6th Avenue.

The closures will take place in both directions until Monday morning, making commuters find alternate routes.

The freeway shuts down Saturday at 10 p.m. and will remain closed through Sunday at 5 a.m. The same thing will occur Sunday night into Monday morning.

Northbound I-25 will detour to northbound Santa Fe Drive, continue north to 8th Avenue, west on 8th Avenue to Kalamath Street, and south on Kalamath Street to westbound U.S. 6 to reconnect with northbound I-25.

Southbound I-25 will detour west on U.S. 6 to Federal Boulevard, south on Federal Boulevard to 5th Avenue to merge onto eastbound U.S. 6, and east on U.S. 6 to reconnect with southbound I-25.

The whole purpose of the construction shutdown is to alleviate traffic. Crews are building a fourth lane on northbound I-25 from Alameda to 6th Avenue.

So far CDOT says the construction project is coming along right on schedule.

"So an incredible amount of work that otherwise would have taken us 25 to 30 nights of overnight closures to complete we're compressing now into about 40 hours of work this weekend," Amy Ford with CDOT said.

Northbound Santa Fe Drive will close just south of I-25 over the weekend with traffic detoured on Mississippi Avenue to northbound Broadway and eventually Lincoln Street. Access to businesses along Santa Fe Drive will be available via Alameda Avenue.

Detour signage will guide commuters through the area.
