COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Hundreds of Fort Carson soldiers hiked as far as 27 miles to deliver blankets, sweaters, toys and bicycles to the needy and homeless for the holidays in Colorado Springs.

The Gazette reports that more than 1,400 members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, carrying the gear on their backs, participated in the 7th annual march, which began Thursday.

More than 360 members of one of the team's battalions participated in the longer march that continued through the night to the Marian House soup kitchen. Lt. Col Lawson Bill says it's a smaller recreation of an 85-mile march by their predecessors in 1900 to rescue Americans in Beijing.
