Fort Carson-Based Medical Unit Gets Send-Off

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- More than 250 soldiers from Fort Carson's 10th Combat Support Hospital will soon join thousands of their comrades in Afghanistan.

The doctors, nurses and medics from the unit are preparing to leave next week for a yearlong deployment to provide medical care for wounded troops and injured Afghanis.

A ceremony to mark the unit's departure was held Friday.

The Gazette reports troops in the medical unit have undergone a year of intense training, with some troops working in Colorado Springs emergency rooms to hone their skills.

One of the unit's doctors, Lt. Col. Bonnie Hartstein, says she'll keep in touch with her husband and two daughters using Skype.
