Former Colorado Cleric Killed In Yemen
DENVER (AP) -- An American-born cleric killed in Yemen earned a degree in civil engineering from Colorado State University in 1994 and gave non-violent sermons before attracting the attention of U.S. intelligence officials.
People who knew Anwar al-Awlaki in Colorado said last year they were surprised by his high-profile radical role. They recalled a deeply religious man with no overt political agenda or talk of terrorism.
Al-Awlaki's English-language sermons later became more virulent and are believed to have inspired several terror plots in the United States and Britain.
Al-Awlaki was killed early Friday in a strike on his convoy carried out by a joint operation of the CIA and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command
