LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - A fire damaged an apartment building in Longmont Thursday night.

The building is located at 1322 South Coffman and it contains six units. Almost all of the roof is gone.

Investigators say the fire was accidental. The casing around the chimney caught fire and spread through the attic where the gasses built up and exploded.

"I saw people running out and screaming it was pretty dramatic," Sheri Collard said. "It spread really quick all the way through the building."

Massive flames were roaring out of the building shortly after 9 p.m.

Longmont fire spokesman Jason Hay said they had a few frantic moments.

"All of the calls were immediately were that this was a fully engulfed building, so that was a bit of a
surprise," Hay said.

One person got a minor burn but no one else was hurt.

RTD sent a bus to take some of the residents to a hotel. Others stayed with friends.

More than two dozen people are out of their homes.
