Fire Chief Denies Impersonating Police Officer

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- Hygiene Fire Protection District Fire Chief William Nelson appeared in Boulder County Court on Thursday. He was arrested two weeks ago in Boulder County on suspicion of impersonating a police officer, drunk driving and possession of marijuana.

Hygiene is a small community west of Longmont. Nelson has been suspended as the fire chief.

Formal felony charges were filed against Nelson in Boulder County Court on Thursday.

Nelson was not willing to comment on anything except the accusation that he impersonated a police officer. When asked about the charge, he told CBS4's Valerie Castro, "No!"

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office said Nelson was arrested after he tried to pull over a car using his personal truck and siren on Highway 36 and Hygiene Road.

Deputies said when they caught up with Nelson, he was visibly drunk and had a rifle and pistol in his truck.

Nelson's attorney gave a short statement after Thursday's court appearance.

"When the facts of this case are developed, it will demonstrate a little different picture than what's been in the press so far, " said Nelson's attorney Mark Biddison.

Nelson's next court hearing is scheduled for next month.
