DPS Task Force Gets Input On School Calendar Start Date

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver Public Schools has formed a task force to determine whether pushing back the start date for students is a good idea.

The first of several meetings to get public input was taking place Thursday evening.

This year, DPS started school Aug. 18. Some parents complain it's too hot to be in classrooms without air conditioning. Many schools are not air conditioned and that means students sit in classrooms that are miserably hot, especially with record-setting heat.

A task force made up of parents, students, teachers and principals met for the first time on Thursday. Their assignment is to produce a survey to gather as much public input as possible.

Everyone involved is being asked to consider the pros and cons of changing the start date.

"There are significant pros to starting later in that early June is generally less hot than late August. At the same time, if we push the start date back, there are also concerns with that, for example our high school sports, the other schools in this area, they start earlier," said DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg.

Once developed, the survey will be available for people to take online. The results will be part of a recommendation from the task force sometime in December.

A final decision on the school start date rests with the school board.
