DPS Says Incentive Pay System For Teachers Is Paying Off
DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Public Schools says the incentive pay system for teachers is paying off.
University of Colorado Denver released a study on the pro-comp program. It shows Denver students at both middle and high school levels are doing much better in math and reading.
The district is also able to hire and retain more experienced teachers, especially in hard-to-staff schools.
"For every open teaching position in Denver Public Schools we see five times more applicants than we saw when Denver voters made the investment in pro-comp 6 years ago," Superintendent Tom Boasberg said.
"We see transformation in this school over time and it's definitely heading in the right direction, just like as the principal explained a few minutes ago in terms of enrollment, in terms of achievement," Henry Roman with the Denver Classroom Teachers Association said.
More than 80 percent of DPS teachers participate in pro-comp. It's paid for by a voter-approved $25 million tax levy.
