DPS First Day Of School Focuses On College, Careers
DENVER (CBS4)- Educators and students celebrated the beginning of a new school year in far northeast Denver on Thursday.
The "First Day Of School" event commemorated Denver Public Schools focus on college and career readiness for students by inviting them and their parents to meet with the individuals focused on helping achieve academic goals.
They gathered early Thursday morning at Denver Center for International Studies at Ford at 14500 Maxwell Place, Collegiate Preparatory Academy at 5290 Kitteredge Street and Oakland Elementary School at 4580 Dearborn Street.
"Our number one goal for our kids is to get them ready for college, that could be a four-year college, that could be a two-year college, but in today's economy it is so critical that our young people graduate from high school and go on to post-secondary education," said DPS Superintendent Tom Boasburg.
Boasburg also acknowledged the achievements of students at Denver Center for International Studies at Ford. DCIS at Ford led the state this year in student academic progress on ACCESS, the K-12 state exam for English language learners.
Most other schools in DPS start on Aug. 24.
