Denver Public Schools Unveils Budget For 2012-13

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Public Schools unveiled its budget for the 20112-2013 school year Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Tom Boasberg headed to Grant Middle School to discuss the new budget.

Even though more state cuts are likely, Denver expects a funding increase. Among the changes that could come next year -- adding an extra hour to the day for middle school.

"Our school year and our school day is too short. We need to be able to offer more time for our students to learn and to grow, to have enrichment opportunities, to have advancement opportunities; to our students who are behind to have the chance to catch up," Boasberg said.

Even before the budget press announcement, the teacher's union filed a class action grievance over the extended hours. The union wants the decision to extend the day to be the school's choice, not the district's choice.

The district must talk with the union within 7 days.
