Denver Firefighters Awarded Nearly $1.4M Grant

DENVER (CBS4)- The Denver Fire Department was awarded a nearly $1.4 million grant for safety equipment.

The grant from FEMA was used for 242 new breathing units and 262 new sets of heavy gear.

"We want to look for manueverability, flexibility and really the longevity of their careers," said Denver Asst. Fire Chief CJ Haberkorn.

The new uniforms have smaller oxygen tanks that makes them lighter. It also gives firefighters better vision because the helmets don't get caught up in the tanks.

There's also less stuff for firefighters to get tangled in as well as more padding in the knees and shoulders and a better rescue harness.

In addition to the money from FEMA, the Friends of Denver Fire Department is raising another $350,000.
