Crews Clear Beetle Kill Trees From Popular Hiking Trail

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Hikers can expect some delays along a popular hiking trail in Summit County while crews cut down trees killed by the pine beetle.

The Colorado Trail winds through the mountains near Breckenridge. The goal is to cut down dead trees so they don't fall on hikers.

The trail won't be closed to hikers, but people may be forced to wait when loggers get close to the path.

"You'll see that there are downed trees at the edge of the trail throughout this area. With that, you'll see more of the spruce, more of the fir trees, and less of the dead lodgepole pine trees adjacent to the trail," said U.S. Forest Service Operations Manager John Hare.

Cutting down the trees also helps reduce the fire danger from beetle kill trees. The logging along the Colorado Trail will continue into September.
