Consulates Host Denver Labor Rights Week
DENVER (AP) - The consulates for Mexico, Guatemala and Peru are hosting seminars in Denver to educate immigrants about their labor rights.
The events tied to the upcoming Labor Day holiday are part of Labor Rights Week. Throughout the week, the consulates in Denver plan sessions with attorneys and local organizations to inform immigrants about rights to minimum wage, worker's compensation, and how to file workplace complaints with state and federal agencies.
Labor Rights Week events are planned in every state with Mexican consulates.
The Mexican consul's office says Latinos have higher workplace fatality rates than whites and blacks and also have more cases of minimum-wage violations than other ethnic groups.
Mexico's Consul General Andres Chao Ebergenyi says all Spanish-speaking immigrant workers are encouraged to visit the consulate's Denver office to learn more about the scheduled events.
