Commuters, Shoppers Battle Deep Snow 3 Days Before Christmas

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4)- Snow piled up in the suburbs of Denver Thursday morning. Some areas are expected to have more than a foot of snow by noon.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall until 9 a.m. with snow tapering off in the afternoon.

Colorado Department of Transportation crews have been on snow shift since noon Wednesday in areas east and south of Denver. Maintenance crews are working 12-hour shifts during the storm and will remain on snow shift after the storm passes for storm cleanup.

South of Denver, full crew coverage- that's about 23 plow trucks- is in place on Interstate 25 between Lincoln Avenue and Greenland, on State Highway 83, Parker Road, between Aurora and the Douglas/El Paso County line, on U.S. 85 between Littleton and Castle Rock, and State Highway 67 between Sedalia and Pike National Forest.

East of Denver to Limon area, three patrols are covering Interstate 70, and U.S. Highways 36 and 40 and State Highway 79 east of Denver.

West of Denver in Jefferson, Park, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties, 51 plow trucks are covering I-70 west to the Georgetown area, U.S. 285, Denver to Fairplay, U.S. 6 and State Highway 119 through Clear Creek Canyon.

In the Colorado Springs area, the heaviest snow is expected around Monument Hill and the Woodland Park area . There are 45 plows covering the Colorado Springs area.
