Colorado Recall Election Changes Being Finalized
DENVER (AP) — A contentious Democrat-led effort to change rules governing recalls after two of their senators were booted from office has cleared the House on a party-line vote.
The House voted 37-28 on Thursday with only Democrats in favor. The bill updates recall requirements that were written long before modern elections procedures, such as mail-in voting.
The legislation comes in the aftermath of last year's recalls of former Sens. Angela Giron and John Morse, who were removed by voters and replaced with Republicans after the Democrats helped pass gun restrictions.
Democrats argue they're trying to update provisions of the law. Republicans say Democrats want to change the rules because they lost the recalls.
The bill has already passed the Senate, but lawmakers must work out small differences before the bill goes to the governor.
