Colorado Company Hailed As Innovative On Food Safety
GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4)- Leprino Foods' Greeley plant is being recognized for it's food safety.
On Thursday the Colorado company opened its new one-million-square-foot facility to two members of President Barack Obama's cabinet and Gov. John Hickenlooper.
The cheese processing plant is the largest producer of mozzarella cheese in the world.
The new complex for Leprino Foods has developed the latest innovation for food safety in the industry.
U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Hickenlooper applauded the new complex.
They believe the company's new safety standards should be an example for the entire industry.
"We've got a cutting edge company that's doing a facility this size is pathogen free. It has a culture of making sure that every ounce of cheese that comes out thereof is absolutely safe. They're never going to have a recall," said Hickenlooper.
Media was denied access inside the facility because Leprino claims proprietary practices and technologies.
The second phase of construction has been completed at the complex. It will be able to process three million pounds of milk to process its cheese products.
When the entire project is complete the plant will process six million pounds of milk for cheese production per day and employ up to 700 people.
