Van strikes, kills Colorado middle school student on Highlands Ranch Parkway
A van struck and killed a 13-year-old in Highlands Ranch on Wednesday morning. It happened after daybreak near the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road.
The middle school student was struck by a van while crossing the street. He was identified by his family as Alexander Mackiewicz.
They told CBS News Colorado's Michael Abeyta that he was on his way to school on a one-wheel, an electric vehicle where the rider balances on a board that sits upon one wheel akin to a skateboard, when he was struck by a Sherwin Williams van.
Alexander's family said that he was very athletic and loved baseball. Wednesday was supposed to be his first practice.
They said he will be missed dearly.
Investigators said the driver stayed on the scene. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the deadly collision is being investigated.
